A Story From Afar...Oscar

A cat in England lost his hind legs in an accident. Thanks to the science, he can now walk normally with two bionic legs that were embedded strategically so he can move normally. Oscar can now walk and move quietly. This may represent an advance in order to develop the same method in humans, for patients without any of their limbs.

The cat was surprised by a harvester while he was lying in a field, but could be rescued.

The veterinary surgeon Noel Fitzpatrick specially designed for him two bionic legs in an operation that lasted three hours.

Since then, the animal has undergone extensive rehabilitation to relearn to walk. “Oscar can now run and jump like other cats,” said Dr. Fitzpatrick.

The technique used for the prosthesis was developed by a team from the University College of London.

The cat suffered occasional infections, but could learn to walk again and to distribute weight on all his legs, including the new ones.

The prosthesis, called ITAP, were attached to the bone at the site of amputation and covered with hydroxyapatite, which promotes the growth of bone and skin over the metal. At the end of ITAP were placed claws.

The cat owners mentioned that this development may initiate studies to develop the technique in humans, so that’s the reason why they didn’t hesitate when they decided to do the treatment for their wound pet.
